This was info I was unaware of. Again I went to register a truck and they told me I needed a dot #. I applied, DMV called me to review the application, she asked me how many trucks I had I told her and she looked them up . Then she told me that my 1 ton had to have my Business name added to the registration she told me what to do which included bringing the title to have the the reg changed. Thats where its gets ugly because Ford Credit has the title and trying to get them to loan it to me is not going to be easy.So now my options are 1- send Ford credit 10k to pay it off 2- go through the hassle and see if Ford credit will help me with the name change (that wont be easy) or 3- have the 1 ton in my personal name as it is now but I would have to have the dot # in my own name which means my personal name would be on the truck instead of my business.I would actually need 2 dot #s So bottom line is until I do this they wont let me register the other truck because I need a current dot # and she wont give me one until the f350 is resolved. It sounds complicated but it really isnt now that I know what they are looking for.

Note to myself when did Ford motor Criedt start holding titles?... To take advantage of a 1,000 rebate two of my trucks had Ford Motor Criedt has lean holder , i had the titles in my file, now when i sold one to a member here the problem i had was getting the stuipd release of lein forum from them from Golden CO were there based out of. But maybe thats a MI thing not sure but 90 percent of the repos i do the bank does not hold the title they are listed has the lein holder and the owner of the vech is in custody of the title.

For DOT you can register has i did i left the example in the Ford thread that Chuck has linked above, the DOT numbers are registered in owner Fred Pickering and Company name Pickering Auto Service Inc., i removed that here for my personal reasons but non the less the USdot number shows both company and myself listed has the operating Auth.

I can see were your getting frustrated however sounds more like your DMV needs to read up. Simple all companys have a owner , be it a LLC, INC, or Sole Prop, either way there your trucks so you should be listed has owner of them again making it only ness to have one set of DOT numbers.

PS They wont issue 2 sets of DOT numbers again i feel bad for you cause i dont understand what you mean that the DMV is reviewing your app for numbers just doesnt make sense.

If i had just added Stepping Stones to the Registration when I bought the truck there would be no issue here. But I put a call into the DMV today and they didnt return my call . I will keep you posted. Fred I will probably give you a call first of the week. Thanks - Kirk

You need to go visit the human in charge of DOT registration for CT. You need to re-register the truck in the name of the company which may mean a sale, depending on CT law. This whole area is very complicated and might even be worth a couple of hours of an attorney's time.

Not sure what CT requires, this tends to vary by state, but the Fed Law prevails in most cases.

Once you get a number then it is a far simpler matter to add other trucks.

Mr. Greene already has his DOT #'s.

However , I don't, probably playing with fire, running a bunch of stuff that needs them and never have had any problems with registrations.

card in his name? (Same deal with me here in NY as my truck or any
truck over 5000 lbs. recieves commercial plates even if registered as
a personal use vehicle. UNLESS it is UNDER 5000 lbs. then it could be
registered with passenger plates here in NY).

Why would the DMV ask anything about a DOT # on a simple non commercial use personal
use vehicle?
I bet the DMV made no mention on a DOT # for ATs truck. But yet again his was new!
Something just doesn't add up.

First off the DMV commercial truck division doesnt care about the insurance id card, they want liability insurance certificate -2 different things. Bottom line is since my 1 ton reg does not match my new dot# application they wont issue me a number until every thing matches. Ive never had dot #s before and want to do the right thing. I went to register the topkick I bought and they told me I needed a DOT #
I appreciate the info from the guys that have helpful info and want to help . opcorn2I have no use for the guys that think they know it all.

I know its confusing it did me at first but i think Stones is getting alot of misinfo from his DMV so i belive it probley has turned into one big mess.

The Fed site is confusing for first time registrants i can image the people at the DMV's and the local law inforcement all have had to take a crash course on this which really isnt new DOT numbers have been for a long time its just that since adding the 10,001 vechs and commerial use its added alot of misunderstood info on all partys.

well that is the thing they make all this stuff that you have to do don't really tell you about it and what explanation they do give is so clutered you have to read it 100 time to get any kinf of meaning. .

they want you to have this and that then they shouldn't blame us they should blame themslef.

1 when you buy a truck that stuff should be present at time of sle or registration. and that's it get the number sign the form have the vehical checked and so on. you call these places or ask some one and get 10 different answers to the same question that is not right. should be the same thing country wide .
And any one with under 10 trucks should be exempt from numbers.

Just as a note: Here in NY a insurance card AND/OR a liability insurance
card (same item no?) are the same thing as far as the DMV is concerned
here in NY. I can say that my liability insurance/plowing liab. ins. are one
in the same policy.

not to get too much off the dot numbers but every small bussiness most likely has a 1 ton truck maby 2 or 3 some may even go up to a 500 size but still small bussiness just the same. commercial plates yes any one that has a bussiness has them. i sware they serve no reall purpose anymore commercial plates but to pau more for insurance. before you could park in the city they would leave your truck alone if you where working but now you pay pay more cost you more if you go thru tunness or tolls. today it's all about how the state can wrench every dollar form the small guy because god knows they can't get it from the big boys. They just do it the leagal way.

As far as insurance goes the CT DMV commercial truck division who handles the dot#s and compliance requires all applicants in CT to submit a liability certificate w/minimum of 750k coverage. When you register a vehicle you need your normal Vehicle insurance id card which needed for any vehicle.2 different insurance requirements.
The Topkick is what brought this whole thing up. The Ford 1 ton has been on the road for 4 years since new in my name only never having dot #s. In fact this past fall I registered a chevy 3500 and they didnt say boo about dot#s.
The issue is not with my insurance I had my agent send me my cert for my 1 ton that says my name only since my 1 ton reg says only my name (remember I cant easily add my business name to it since its financed)
The topkick which is not registered yet will be in my name and the business as Fred said Now again what they told me at DMV is the policy for the topkick and the 1 ton dont match so no dot# until then.
I could solve all this if i could just add my Business name to the 1 ton reg. I will go to DMV in person on tuesday and see what my options are. I will keep you posted.

Another inspector said i needed it on everything trailers included & I had to register the truck with the number.

well there on my truck and I carry plenty of insurance coverage on it. I see alot of 1 ton trucks without them. this state is so confusing I don't even understand what they want. Some dot inspectors say you need yearly inspection other guys say 1 tons and pickups don't

Back to Mike the largest Towing company in Midland has 35 tow trucks not one has a USDOT number on it now iam not gonna follow the pied piper into the river and drown because my biggest comp isnt complaint.

Again for those that didnt read i wrecked my 08 Sterling Wrecker on Jan 31st in the city limits of Midland, the cop admitted to me he had not filled out the Dot accident report before but Nov he had to start carrying them in the cars, it took close to a 1/2 hr for him to fill this fourm out. The forum was long and asked all the questions , i had to show my med card, and Fed inspection sticker, i noticed he checked the safty gear box probley because i have seen this same cop on rotation and iam sure he knew i was carrying the gear.

In 05 when i became legal the second largest towing company mocked me shortly after and had all there numbers on the truck. In Mi iam required to have a MPSC number to Tow .

I said the above because on the day of my accident Beehrs the big company here was on rotation i know the guys and they made a comment on why it was taking so long to move my truck off the bank it couldnt be moved til the forum was filled out i told them looking at there blank missing numbered trucks i told them your boss is flirting with disaster.

Another three weeks ago Jack picked up a 1 ton service truck that crossed the center line sending a young kid by chopper to Ann Arbor were he is still listed has Serious, we hauled the Service truck back to our impound lot since at time of scene there was no Fatals , the following day the motor carrier divison showed up Jack had to haul the truck down to the scales were it was determined it was over the truck was missing DOT numbers the guy driving had passed out from a blood sugar issue , know you can connect the dots were this company is heading Jack said a total of 9 voilations were on the inspection forum it isnt gonna be pretty when it goes to court and worse yet if the kid he injuryed doesnt make it. Again a 1 ton service truck....

Here in NY we have the availability to register a vehicle in a name other than the owner. It is a simple check box on the registration application. The title stays in the owners name and is not even needed for the transaction if the vehicle is already registered in your name. Title is not needed because you are not conveying ownership, just registration. Does CT have that option? Most states do. What would happen if the vehicle owned by you in your own name was registered in the company name?

Trucking companies do it all the time if they furnish the base plate. I am not sure if CT does it or not but I would be surprised if they didn't. I had done it here with my 04 Ram CTD 3500 when I moved it into the company name for registration/insurance purposes only but the title remained in my name. I am not saying you can do this for sure in CT but i know you can in most, if not all states. Morning Fred. If we are going to have a forum for it let see if we can find some DOT Reps to chime in. That would be a great help to those that just "dabble" with trucks that are at the bottom end of the DOT Spectrum.

I went through the same thing here with some of the other guys that said I was foolish to put the effort into getting everything "right" and wasting my time and money. 3 months after we got our numbers we had our federal safety audit and were found to be compliant and were immediatley removed from the "Newbie list" on the FMSCA website. The stragglers have not been so fortunate and have fallen under a lot of scrutiny.

How many guys here with USDOT#'s know they have to go to the FMCSA's website every 2 years and update you 150 form to stay in compliance? Also, you need to based on the last 2 digits of your DOT number, the last digit corresponds to the month you need to do it and the second to the last didgit is whether it is an odd or even year that you do it.

Way too many people think getting your number is the only thing you need to do but if you want to keep your number and stay in compliance then you need to do regular things with it to keep it up.

I am in no way shape or form trying to sound like an authority in the matter because I learn more about it everyday but with the new operating authority we have it just adds to the need to bring new thing into the business that were not there before so again, more learing.
