Ford or Dodge

I have hard a lot of bad things about the 48re. Almost as much as the 47
Not only unreliable, but outdated...the 48RE hasnt been put in a dodge since 12/31/06.....about 3 years now....he is looking at 2010 trucks....where is the connection, and how does it at all relate the trucks he's looking at?

There is no Aisin auto in Dodge pickups, only the chassis cabs,so that info was was incorrect as well.
Oh, I missed this part as well. :beatsme Either way, the 68RFE is supposed to be a very nice transmission.

I haven't been able to drive a new 6sp 68RFE yet, but I'd like to :) I don't really have any complaints with my 48RE. It has a bit of a slip in 2nd and I think the torque converter is going out, but it's not like I was very nice to it the first year I owned the truck. I've been limping along for the last two years after developing said 'problems' without much issue. No one else can feel the slip or anything, so they all think I'm nuts. I took it to a transmission shop and he said it was hardly noticable on his scantool. I was quoted about $2k for a better-than-stock rebuild though, so I'm not too concerned with it sucking me dry....

Thats what i thought

I did not know he was looking for 2010s. If i was you i would wait and take a look at both new trucks. Have you seen the new dodges up close. DAM they are sexy. Dodge has really steped up the bar with their new ones. I still have not seen fords new one yet, but they look pretty good.

Ford is coming out with their new engine and a new tranny. So both are untested. I dont know if i would want a first year engine AND transmission. Maybe one of the other, but not both.

If you are looking to buy right now i guess i would go with the dodge if you can keep up with the tranny. Just might be worth investing the extra $2k in it. Still no telling how the new ones will do. But we all know the engine is rock solid. And i heard the front end is beefed up a little on the new dodge, so that would help bring it in line with the ford.

Well here my opinion based off a pickup if i was going that route for plowing it would be a Ford with a V10 i have owned 9 Superdutys and outside of the 6.0 and now the 6.4 debacle the chassis is much stronger.

Now if i was building a snow fighter so to speak hads down a Dodge CC which can be purchased cheaper than a Pickup even outfitted with a flatbed or dump.

I have owned first a Sterling and now a Dodge 5500 the powertrain is what sold me and hands down is the best value and quailty. The 6.7 makes tons of power backed with the 6speed auto , now if you were to go this route and speed not power is your concern unless you take a trip to Midland Mi a Dodge CC wont do a dime over 76mph with it speed limiter which i unlocked when when i had the Sterling.

Dodge CC interiors like mine they still havent done anything withthe seats which are not real comfortable just got both of mine back which i took from the wrecked Sterling and had them redone they now have enough foam my ass isnt dragging after 100 miles. Other than that i like the Dodge and will be my choice for CC wreckers from now on .

Ford if you had problems with a Dmax then you surly dont want to venture into the land of the 6.4 the V10 makes about the same power and mileage which isnt very good on a 6.4 anyway would be about the same.

Again my buss ran both Snow plowing and Wreckers one time soley on Superdutys and i still feel for a pickup there the best choice however the Diesel isnt even a option imo the torqe shift tranny after they got the bugs worked out has been better than the pickup Dodge trans.

The 6 speed auto nothing out there compares unless your talking a RDS2200 Ally just my two pennys.

Thats what i thought
No, it's not what you thought....

I spent the first year I owned the truck (before I really spent much time researching things) drag racing, pulling, etc without any mods to the transmission. Stack programmers and you really are asking for trouble with a stock transmission. With some modifications at least, you're pretty much in the clear.

You seem to know all there is to know about Blizzard Plows and Dodge Transmissions. Kind of ironic really. :wink

And Maelawncare, I notice that your in Rolla MO......I bet we know alot of the same people....

Pj
I dont know if we do. Have you ever been down here? Cause i have never been to KC. Although i do know a few people who have moved up there. My wife works for Missouri S&T which is part of the UM system. There is one in KC.

Have you decided on which truck you want to go with?

No, it's not what you thought....

There was a guy locally who also plowed in the winter that did dodge modifications. He is in jail now  long story, but before that he knew his stuff. Before he was arrested he was installing a new cummins in a 04 that a guy blew up, upgraded turbo and propane injection did not go good with a lead foot he melted the engine. So yes i have no personal experience, which i never claimed to have. Just what i have heard from people who deal with it everyday. And i saw the new dodges at the EXPO this year. They are awesome trucks. I really hope that the new 6speed auto does better. Cause if it does, it might finally get ford a run for their money in the work truck segment. Ford needs to be knocked off the top as the best selling truck. It will help them innovate a lot more. Chevy may be nice, but their too expensive and in my opinion not as much of a work truck as ford or dodge.

I have 2 f250 v10s. A 99 and a 00. And i love them. Yes i would much rather have a diesel. But my v10s have been perfect for me, other than 5mpg plowing :p But i get 8 towing my enclosed around town and 16 on the highway so its not too bad considering diesel is about .20cents more a gallon. And when i had 99 7.3 powerstroke for the life of me i could never get that thing to go past 10mpg towing and 16 on the highway. And no i had no mods on it.

And he asked for opinions. Sorry if i voiced my opinions in what i have heard and experienced. Excuse me. I guess i should start having my wife proof read my postings so i dont tick you guys off. She always tells me to keep my mouth shut :p

I think Johnny D and others commented your not gonna get the Dodge 6 speed auto unless you buy a 1 ton heavy or a CC 4500 , 5500 .

I dont think its that Johnny U is upset just trying to keep facts striaght for someone making a expensive choice.

Nope, not upset in the slightest. I just don't like people spouting off that Dodge transmissions always have been and always will be junk. That's just not true. I admit that I don't know it all, and that I was wrong on which transmission he was looking at. I still think you can get a 6sp auto in the P/U, it's just not the Aisin found in the C&C; I think the P/U version is the 68RFE, isn't it?

For what it's worth, I'm really starting to dislike the 'stereotypical' diesel truck hot-rodder. Some of these kids with their sky-high lifts and smoky stacks are becoming almost as bad as the Ricers were.....

Thanks JohnnyD for setting us straight.

I am under the assumption that the new trannys are in the 2500/3500 trucks also. If you look at options, you will see the 6 speed auto available on the 2500s. The 5 speed is standard, and the 6 speed is an option.

http://www.dodge.com/en/2010/ram_2500_3500/capability/powertrain/

I agree with the whole ricer comment. :p Seems like their starting to get as bad as them. Its cummins or die for some of them.

And not all dodge trannies are junk. If you ran them bone stock you could get a lot of mileage out of them. Seems like most people dont though. You have problems in all the big 3. Ford ruined it with their 6.0s, not all were junk, but a lot were. I dont know of any bad things on chevys off hand.

I seriously want to give the new dodges a try. The engine is a proven platform and hopefully the new tranny will be just as good. Ford has had some bad luck with their powerstrokes the last few years. So i also hope their new in house will be good, but only time will tell. And for the original poster, he wants something now. Try to stick with what you think will work best.

But the most important thing about buying a new truck is. Do you like it! That will the biggest thing about how good the truck is. If you hate it, more than likely you will have nothing but problems.

The Dodges locking diffs are just one more plus for drivetrain, and no truck moves more from a tap of the toe like a I-6 there is no need to wait for the turbo to spool the power is rite there at all times .Cummins is no doubt the better motor its the rest you need to decide about. So a dodge chassis cab3500 can come with a diffrent trans than the P-U thats something the people selling them dont even know, trans doubts is the only thing that kept me from going Mopar I wish someone came up with this thread a fue months ago.

Mae,

I know this thread is about Ford and Dodge - so I'll just point this out and move on. Just having a hard time following your arguments.

I guess i should start having my wife proof read my postings so i dont tick you guys off. She always tells me to keep my mouth shut :p
Your wife strikes me as a wise woman. :wink

I married up too!

Rick - too bad you've had the trouble with the LMM. If it were my choice - tough to beat the Cummins. I have no ownership experience with either the 6.7 or 6.4 - but if I had to choose...

Would the new truck be a 2010? Or you going to wait for the 2011? Ford's new offering looks like it will either be a hit or complete miss. I'm interested in the PTO option...

well, the dealer came back and admited a honest mistake,.....i was looking at everything on the lot and priced me a Lariat instead of a KingRanch, so in the long run the KR was about $1,400 more than the Dodge,......so I ordered a Dodge, then he called me back and said that they were at least 12 weeks out and no gurantee on that even,....so when all said in done I bought the KingRanch lol.

Thanks for all the Replies it has been an interesting read that is for sure, some great post as well.....some not so great post too though ;) lol.

Now to pick out a plow, i am thinking a Mega or a Wideout. any opinions?

Pj

I am on my 3rd winter plowing and 40k miles. My tranny (68RFE) hasn't missed a beat! Knock on wood! Love it! low end torque right to the gound and cruse along at 65mph on the highway.

Oh dear, here we go again. :D I'll stay out of this one. It might help to make a new thread on that one. Or search.

And good luck on the new truck. Post up some pics when you get some.

There are a few forums dedicated to the 6.4. Heres one, just to find a few quick FAQs

There are some common mods. But staying stock will defiantly keep your warranty. A lot of dealers are starting to get picky on kicking you off warranty.

Well congrats and alot of Good Luck too ya...:wink Did you buy two or just one ? Just wondering a spare is handy kinda like a tire.

On plows the XLS over the Wideout any day the Wideout rides up way to much , dont know about the Mega thought they all went back to the factory.?

Honeslty in this whole thread the truth is owning both Supers and Dodges if someone really wanted to start a thriving company they would take a Superduty and swap a cummins and Asin 6 speed in it and it would be the perfect truck.

I too, am confused. What does this have to do with anything in this thread?

So yes i have no personal experience, which i never claimed to have.

Then maybe you should be careful on commenting.

Just what i have heard from people who deal with it everyday.

From your brother's uncle's girlfriend's wife's father's BFF?

And i saw the new dodges at the EXPO this year. They are awesome trucks. I really hope that the new 6speed auto does better. Cause if it does, it might finally get ford a run for their money in the work truck segment.

I thought you said get the Ford for working?

Ford needs to be knocked off the top as the best selling truck.

Why? They're the only one of the Big 3 that didn't take any money from us after running their companies into the ground/

It will help them innovate a lot more. Chevy may be nice, but their too expensive and in my opinion not as much of a work truck as ford or dodge.

Just make sure you differentiate between your experiences and opinions.

Excuse me. I guess i should start having my wife proof read my postings so i dont tick you guys off. She always tells me to keep my mouth shut :p
Like Dave said, you may want to take her advice, since you seem to have confused just about everyone with your statements.

LMAO, so did I.

You may want to do some checking before jumping into a Mega. Do you have Bard's number?

Well congrats and alot of Good Luck too ya...:wink Did you buy two or just one ? Just wondering a spare is handy kinda like a tire.

Ouch

Still up for it Fred? I have a donor engine for my truck.
