I've been doing the Google thing and found some things for it, but most places don't carry parts for the earlier Jeeps, (pre-72). Body parts aren't the issue, those are everywhere. Parts like heavy duty bumpers, winch mounts etc., everything I can find is for later model CJs, (post '75) or late model vehicles. That being said, will some of these parts fit? Can I take a bumper that fits a 75 CJ5 and make it work? I know the frames, except for length are dimensionally the same, but does everything else match up or do I have to some modifications?

Little story when i was stationed in Ft Carson CO i learned fast the only way i was gonna have fun was get a jeep. I bought a CJ5 from a place called Rocky Mountain 4x4 it was a 67 frame and they did a Fiberglass body, had a 350 V8 and with adaptors they used the orginal 3 speed manuel with a overdrive unit because of the 530 gears this thing ran , all bumpers be it Warn Rock Crawler stuff which i prefer can be adapted to the older frame horns no problem.

I had the time of my life with that jeep in 82 and when it came time to drive back here before i was stationed in Germany i drove the 6 inch lifted CJ with its 35in mudders i can rember the 10 gal fuel tank made for alot of stops , the company i bought it from had a cool gas can rack/ swing gate on the rear which held 2 miltary 5 gal fuel cans. Top speed with the od unit was about 55mph it took me three days to do the 1750 mile trip back here and i can remember at night in motels being able to hear the tire noise in my ears til i fell asleep.

Anyway this is were i gained my passion for Jeeps so i have retrofitted more winch bumpers , pull plates, rear bumpers than i care to count on the old 60's CJ's. One thing i highly recomend and i can get you part numbers is get the front brakes converted to Disc the 4 drum system just about killed me more than once with brake fade in the mountians of CO.

I love my 02 Wrangler i built mostly because of the interior up grades they went threw in 97 when the TJ was released like the real dash and such, however nothing beats a 60's CJ for a max build for offroading.

Great story!
Thanks for the info. I'm going to drop Buick V6 in this one, (starting in '66 this was an option). It now has the "F" head 4 cylinder. Novak makes an adapter kit to use the original transmission/transfer case and they make motor mounts as well. I'm not sure what the gear ratios are, (haven't gotten that far), but an overdrive unit is in this one's future too.
Thanks for the advice on the brakes, I found an article in JPmagazine about how to convert the front brakes, http://www.jpmagazine.com/techartic...om/techarticles/drivetrain/154_0704_early_jeep_disk_brake_conversion/index.html, please let me know if you have an easier or more reliable way. Nobody makes kits for the early Jeeps that I have found. I have tons of GM parts from my '77 and '79 trucks, just no Dana 44 brake parts. I'm going to have to hit the junkyards!
