Beacons for Dump Truck

Today going down the highway I noticed a highway crew with a similar sized truck as ours (K3500 diesel with Rugby dump body). They had two beacons attached to the dump body. One on each side at toward the top of the head board. They were somehow attached to the outside (where the tarp handle is—or close to it).

I like this idea. So I'm wondering if they are a special setup by a specific vendor and how is the wiring set up? If anyone has done this let me know. I'd like to see some pics and suggestions how I could do this. Thanks

There are two ways I've seen it done. One is welding a little platform on the head board or the other is welding a 1" pipe to the side and the beacons screw on to it. I will try to get pics of both as I know guys that did both. I think the best way is welding the platform.

As for the wiring, raise the dump and see if there are any wires already run from the front to the back. I know on the body I wired there were clips holding the power wire for the marker lights around the body. If the clips are in a good spot, wire tie to it. When at the rear, just look to how the other wires are run to avoid pinching them.

I've got beacons mounted to the head board of my flatbed. What I did was weld a plate to a piece of angle and bolted it to the headboard. When you run your wires, put a loop in the wire where it transgresses from the frame to the dump body to allow for flexing.

There are also fancier methods. You can get a bracket that will be self-leveling as the body rises. This offers good visibility no matter what level you are at.

may I suggest LED's?

I have the nova wide angle LED strobes on the front of my truck, they are bright with a increadibly great viewing angle for LED plus they can be mounted on a flat surface only protruding about a 1/8" so they do not get in the way...

I have attached a picture of the light, the nice part is these have the flasher built in so you only need 12v and if you wish to change the pattern a mode trigger wire. I buy them on ebay from buckeye public safety...

I see that alot more where the leds are being put in the front and sides of the dump cab sheild or at an angle on the sheild. My freind has some whelen 2020's on the inside of the cab sheld with a plate welded on a 45 to mount it to instead of having it hang out on the sides.

the beuaty is that they don't draw any power; less than a 1/4 amp max, they are bright, and they are out of the way. I know we do not have plows here but we do have a lot of dump trucks running around and I cannot tell you how many have broken roators and strobe heads simply because they stick out, I guess it is all in how you use it right :)

Rocket, I see those brackets mostly on municiple trucks, I know State of Pennsylvania used to run them on their trucks, they use tailgate spreaders. I can't remember seeing them for sale anywhere, but you might try www.awdirect.com
