Maybe this is kind of a silly question but is there any helpful reading material or videos out there? I know the SIMA website has a whole packet that includes several tests but I think that is more for a group. I am just looking for something for myself.
Thanks

William

Chuck wrote his own book called The Snowplowing Handbook. I bought a copy from him several years ago when I was just started out and it is a huge help. Very informative & well detailed. I'd recommend it to anyone in snowplowing industry.

Sima has a whole series of videos as well, I have not personally viewed any but they have quite a few.

I have seen a few of the SIMA training videos. The basic ones are just that, basic. They are great for those new to plowing. They also offer them in Spanish, which is a great tool for laborers. Many of them have never even seen snow before in person! All of the videos stress safety. I consulted on two of the videos, and gave input on a third through someone working on the video.

I have not seen the two newest ones, but I would imagine they are great training tools too. The videos also include a quiz that can be passed around at the end, to see how much was absorbed by those who viewed it.

I don't plug my book often, but I will say it is written more from the driver's seat than from behind a desk. There are tons of books about running a business, so I did not focus on that. I need to do another revision, and add more of what I have learned in the past two years or so, and things I left out of previous versions.

John Allin's book is a good one to have in your collection too......

Right now I'm just lookin for something for myself. I don't have a crew so the SIMA material might be a bit overkill, unless I wanted to test myself over the video.

Bill -

You asked about training videos - as far as I know SIMA training videos are the only ones on the market. They're worth the money both for yourself but also if you intend on growing your business by bringing in new employees. Like Chuck I've worked on several of them and they were developed since there wasn't anything else on the market to serve this need. The SIMA education committee continues to work on future training videos and one or two new ones are in development now.

As far as books:
1) Chuck's as mentioned
2) John Allin's as mentioned
3) Snow and Ice Control Manual for Transportation Facilities by David Minsk
4) Transportation Canada's Training Modules available here: http://www.tac-atc.ca/english/informationservices/readingroom.cfm

There are some other books that are available on the topic but may not provide you with consise information. I'd be interested in knowing what else is out there. The SIMA BOG tried to locate the best reference materials when developing the CSP Exam for the Snow Science and Snow Mechanics sections. The materials used to develop these two sections are items #3 and #4 above and the SIMA training videos.

If you want to get lost in reading try the salt institutes web site and start clicking on the links. You'll have no shortage of reading. http://www.saltinstitute.org/
