My mechanis completed the install of the pto and live hydros today on the 5500. We had been picking away at it for a couple months gathering up what was needed. The rams and hydros that I bought and used for my dump trailer also happened to come with a pto pump, and I'll be damned if it wasn't the right one for the 5500 pto. Not a bad score for the $500 I threw for the entire set-up of 2 rams, 2" round stock for hinges, side plates, hoses, pto, valves, pump, cables, tank and control consol.
The control console was too big and gaumy for the truck, so my mechanic made a holder out of 6" channel. The pto fit fine, but the pump ran in reverse so we had to split it and flip the intake/outlet side of the pump. He needs to make a new bracket, as once we flipped it the bracket he made no longer fits.
It dumps FAST! Like 4-5 seconds and the body is up, but the relief is set too low, so when he comes back tomorrow he will adjust that and install the bracket.
Our next step is to split the built-in valve on the pump and add a section to run the tailgate hydros. Then my SS hydro tailgate unit will be installed.
Seems nice to have real hydros instead of the electric dump. That electric unit will go on the dump trailer to finish that project up.
The switch that runs it is different than the original factory. It's the red one in the pics. The pto will run as long as the truck is moving or in park, at least thats what I've found thus far. Stepping on the brake does not cut it out, only coming to a stop. Just how I wanted it. Also, by doing it this we we do not limit the motor to 2000 rpm's. Seems to work well.
