I started a Landscape business about 3 years ago, and it has grown from 3 yards to 55 accounts. I am going to start to do my own fertilizer next year, and for the past 2yrs of snow removal I have used an Earthway spreader. It is ok and does the job somewhat effective. I went to my Lesco Dealer and saw a new 85 pound spreader and was amazed at how much better built it was than my Earthway and my old Lesco spreader. Is it worth money for the new one, and will it last through salting and fertilizing? ( current price for spreader 300.00 )

I would stick to the earthways for salt. We use a lesco for our fert and IMO its a nice spreader however i wouldnt spend 300.00 on any spreader that is going to get used for salt. Besides I like the sidewalk gaurds on the Earthways much better for spreading salt.

A friend picked up a "Ice Buster" walk behind spreader from Northern Tool. It holds 100# and works great. Plus at a $160 it's a great deal.
Lesco surprises me on some of their pricing. They can be so much cheaper on one item and alot higher on another. I do use all Lesco mowers and Kawi handhelds.

What model has the guards ?

Earthscapes- How has your Ice Buster held up ? I had heard the Buyers Salt Dog/ Ice buster's had a weak gear box ? Any problems with yours ? It sounded as if with a full hopper the gear boxes dont hold up. We need a new one and I would like a deflector, but hate to spend 175.00 for the Salt Dog if it wont hold up.

T-Zab,

It's not my mine. I don't think he's had any problems, as he hasn't ask me to fix it yet. Though it's probably only been used 5 or 6 times this season.

SPG,

Is that the new Lesco ice melt spreader they were supposed to have out last month ?? I heard about it, but for some reason new products take forever to make it to NY. Also does it hold 50 or 80#'s ?

Thanks
Keith

Spreader

My gearbox on my earthway is the getting pretty noisy and it clogs like no tommorow with ice melt. I think i am going to go and as my lesco dealer if they can get me the 150.00 dollar one you guys speak of. Here is something to chuckle at: I got a call from one of my sub developments today and they want me to come out and out one more application of winterizer on the yards because they feel with our recent up and down temperatuers here in NW Ohio that is will help out in the spring. If I remember correctly its not even winter ( December 21 first day of winter):cash

I have the Earthway and Lesco both and plan on using the Lesco just because it has the rear drop spreader on it.

$175 for the spreader or the deflector? I am looking at the Salt Dogg (stainless steel) and I've been quoted $329–$380. Point me in the right direction. Has anyone experience with these push models?

I've used Earthway for several years. Works fine with bagged, dry, fine material but not as good with treated material or anything a little clumpy. The gear box is not quite as tough as spyker spreaders which I hear from their rep. handles salt without issue.

Lesco spreader

I stopped into my lesco store today, and she said " lesco doesn't make a 150.00 spreader it must of been used, hot, or something else" So where ever you got your spreader from let me know because I would like to buy one.

The lesco one in the picture goes for 450.00 on there web site.

I guess I will spring for a Salt Dog, we really need a deflector on most of our sites. The other spreader we were using had more product on the beds and lawns then on the side walks. Throwing by hand worked better and the shovelers prefer it. I know a decent spreader would really speed it up though.
Once the checks start trickling in, and we get the cash flow back up I will pop for one. Spent enough of my money allready this year on start up and the last storm.

Here are the pics of the lesco Ice melt spreader. Brand new from lesco $150.00. I was at my lesco dealer today and he still has 5 in stock and is ordering more!

Is the gear box plastic ? I dont know if the salt dog is but they claim the gear box on the dog is "heavy duty", what ever that means. I like the salt deflectors on that Lesco, let us know how it holds up.

Lesco spreader

Just got my lesco spreader today, and it seems/is a really nice unit for the price. Thanks for putting the picture up on the internet so i could see the thing. It was 90% assembled when I got it today and it took me about 10 minutes to put together. Now all we need is some snow!!!
But even that front looks better because I was looking at a couple weather/snow prediction websites today and they are calling for snowfall between Christmas and New Years here in NW Ohio. Thanks again.:waving
