My plow is about 10 years old. Fisher. Has what I assume is the plastic edge.
It has a few nicks here and there. Little worn on the outside edges. I just have a dirt gravel driveway I plow of my own.
I'm curious can you flip this over? reverse it?
Why do a lot of the plows I see have a metal edge? Would that be better or last longer.
I see a guy in my state selling Edges on Craiglist for $100 or should I just go with factory? I would think metal is going to last my lifetime.
Ideas?

No

Metal edges scrape better and are much, much cheaper than the plastic

Plastic is less damaging to the surface and weighs less.

In your case, I assume you have the 7.5 SD and they use the plastic edge on it because the few lbs that it saves in weight made a big difference (at one time anyway) in the # of recommended truck applications.

The metal edge is that much heavier? Yes its the 7.5 SD. Would I have a problem adding metal when I change it, if its going to snow every few days I just leave it on when I just drive around town.If going on a trip to the big city I do take it off.

No, just "heavier." When you get into the acceptable range of the newer half tons, 15 lbs can be enough to make a popular truck "not recommended" which is deal breaker for many people. No one wants to buy a $50k truck and hear that neither Chevy nor Fisher will warranty the truck in the event of a failure because there was too heavy of a plow installed.

It isn't that 15lbs is going to snap the front end of the truck in half, just that there is no gray area. The Chevy/Ford/Whoever engineers dictate that such-and-such truck can only have X lbs on the front end. And so the plow mfgs do whatever they can to shave weight off to keep the plow under that number. In the case of your SD, these days it's still too heavy even with the plastic edge to be recommended for some of the newer vehicles which forced Fisher to build the 7.5 HT as a complete new replacement for that very reason. They couldn't care less what you chose to put on it for an edge later.
