These are the requirements I just printed. I have a 1 ton F350. I was told by a friend if I buy a trailer of 10,000lb rating a need a CDL, but if I am reading these requirements correctly it looks like I dont need one if I buy a trailer over 10,000lbs as long as my GCWR does not go over 26,000lbs. Am I missing something or can a buy a 12,000 or 15,000lb trailer and still be fine?

A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is Required if you drive ANY of the following commercial vehicles for hire ANY place in the United States...


A vehicle with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 lbs.

A trailer with a manufacturer's GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs. when the GCWR exceeds 26,000 lbs.

A vehicle designed to carry 15 or more passengers (excluding the driver).

A vehicle of ANY size or type which requires hazardous materials placards.

I'm not well versed in the regs out your way but I would read it such that as long as your Gross Combined Weight Rating doesn't exceed 26,000 lbs. you're OK.
What is your GVW on the truck?

this is like a lot states and their (interpretation) and of which cop wants to interpret which way. For your information, I bought a Bri-Mar 18 footer 12,000 GVW trailer a few months back. In this state of Connecticut you "WILL" have a CDL for this trailer regardless what vehicle pulls it or the gross cargo weight.
For me it wasn't a problem as I got my class 1 license in the late 60's. One long test when they first talked of CDL's and a transfer of type from class one to CDL A.

Depends on your state....

Here in NY there are a lot of wacky rules and they supercede federal rules in some instances. In NY, I believe, not 100%, that you need a CDL if your trailer exceeds 10K GVW. I have a Class A so it's not a biggie for me, but DOT is beating up people left and right over by me in Goshen, NY. Hardly a day goes by that they aren't set up in the parking lot of CVS.

Didn't see your location listed so I thought I'd just toss that out for the masses...

IF YOU GO OUT OF STATE 10,001 TO 26,000 YOU HAVE TO BE 21 YEARS OLD & HAVE PHYSICAN CARD! I TAG ALL MY TRAILERS AT 10,000 TO 16,000 (REMEMBER ITS COMB. OF BOTH)
ONE OTHER THING (A SLIDE IN HITCH IS 10,000) IF YOU HAVE HITCH WELDED ON YOU CAN GO OVER THE 10,000! D.O.T. IN AREA ARE STRICT!

My Ford slide in Hitch in now rated at 12,500lbs Thanks for the information guys. It looks like the laws are a little fuzzy everywhere.

I know in Michigan you would need a CDL A. I asked four diffrent city police departments, one said even if you were pulling it with an Escort if the rating on the trailer was over 10,000lbs you need an A.

over 26,000 requires a CDL B atleast if its a straight truck.trucks with air brakes a CDL is a must have.if you have a straight truck and hook a trailer onto it to haul heavy equipment like a case backhoe you will need a CDL A if its over the listed rate for a CDL B.every state is different thats why i went and got my CDL A with H & T Endorsements

TRAILER SAFTY CHAINS MUST BE CROSSED! TWO AXLE OR MORE TRAILERS MUST HAVE BREAK AWAY BRAKES! OVER 10,000 HAVE TO HAVE TRIANGLES, FIRE EX, IN TRUCK!

I've been through this extensively. If you are under 26000 gross combined vehicle weight, regardless of trailer rating, a class c is all you need. If you have a class b and are hauling a trailer behind a truck weighing less than 10,000 you do not need a class a.

These are federal regs., but some states may have stricter rules. It has been my experience that local cops will ticket and a judge or DA will throw it out once it is explained. If you have questions, call you MVO or DOT enforcement, local cops seldom work with the federal regs and aren't always up on the rules.

Classification of Licenses

Commercial Driver's License

A = Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds providing the gross vehicle rating (GVWR) of the vehicle(s) being towed in excess of 10,000 pounds.

B = Any single vehicle with GVWR of 26,000 or more pounds, or such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

C = Any single vehicle not in excess of 26,001 pounds, or any such vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR, including vehicles required to be placarded for hazardous materials; or any vehicle designed to transport more than 10 passengers, including the driver, used to transport students under the age of 21 years to and from school.

Non-Commercial Driver's License

1 = Any motor vehicle except a commercial motor vehicle.

2 = Any motor vehicle, including a recreational vehicle of any weight, except a commercial motor vehicle of an articulated vehicle or combination of motor vehicle and trailer where the gross weight of the trailing unit or trailer is more than 10,000 pounds.
