The second year in a row I have damaged my rear bumpr on my 2009 Chevy 2500HD, now my brother just called he did the same thing on his 1500 by backing into a snow bank. His is 3 months old, this is BS that the bumper cant take backing into a snowbank at 3-5 mph, with out folding into the bed corner.
Any one know of a maker of a HD unit maker. I prefer to stay with somthing factory looking as it my personal truck as well. My brother is one of the best welders around, so if I need to go the fab route he can do anything I want (thinking stainless possibly) as the last repair was $ 1200.

The problem is like anything else they "Don't make them like they use to".
Even the old school look-a-likes don't measure up (at least the ones i have seen). I use to be able to pull stumps and jack the truck up on the old style Step and Tow bumpers of years ago. Back into something ? Wouldn't even put a scratch in it. Now you look at a snow bank or tree etc and they fold like a cardboard box.
You might want to look at off road bumpers as a suggestion. Have seen some pretty heavy duty units driving around and with winch mounts etc you would expect on a heavy duty unit.

The both of you could make a real nice custom unit tailor made for your app if you wanted. But you might find what you need in the off-road application.

I had one and the biggest issues with where that it did not provide good wide to step or work to use the bed of the truck. DON'T use their receiver hitch. It only mounts to the bumper. It's crazy thick steel, but it is a 4 or 6 point mount like a true trailer hitch. It puts all the weight on the bumper mounts.

The quality was excellent and it was beefy.

Try Browns Welding out of Texas. They where they only shop who would make a bumper an 1.5" longer on each side. The stock bumper width does not provide enough coverage to protect your rear quarters. Super people to deal with, great quality, and I think they charged me $75 to make the bumper wider. Most shops flat out said no, or wanted $500 more for "custom".
Price was fair.

Wow few typos there. The Reunel doesn't have enough area to step on and I do not believe it's hitch design is very tow worthy.

They make a heavy duty bumper but it's pricey.
Sharp bumper, painted though. Not too bad at $ 699, The one Im leanig toward is $ 675, but is powder coated. It sounds like alot...but the stok tin can sheet metal bumper sections are about $ 250 each, this is the second one Ive bent backing into snowbanks, then add the damage to the bedside from when it folds into the bed. Well worth the moneyin my book $ 700 once or 6-1200 yearly....in repairs.

I just ordered a bumper from Fab Fours http://www.fabfours.com and wanted to give everyone a heads up on some info.

They have a newer "Ranch Style" Black steel bumper http://www.fabfours.com/BLACKSTEEL/GMC/07510GMCHDBlackStealRearBumperthat is now available and comes at a great price.

$580 for the bumper plus $160 for shipping...2 weeks for delivery.

They tried to steer me to one of their distributors as "they don't keep much stock on hand any more", but none of distributors seemed to offer it, or have any in stock, so they processed the order for me. Only other place I did get #'s from quoted me $618 for the bumper and $250 for shipping...plus about a 4 week delivery date.

I just ordered it today, but will update when it gets here.

I just got my truck back from the body shop!

For sure those 3 piece tinfoil bumpers on the gmt-900s suck!
YES....I said 3 piece !

My right side of the rear bumper was pushed into the body when
I backed into a snow bank. The left side was BENT in and the quarter
panel bent pretty good from some a-hole sliding around a corner and
smashing into it while parked ! A trapped deer also dented in my door!

Poor truck worked hard and took a beatin' this year without a wimper
at 4 years old!

Since plow duty is done for the year my bud took it to his side work
shop and repaired and painted the body damage. He scrounged up
a left side bumper piece that was scratched and replaced on a
customers car ($225+ for that ONE piece at the dealer). He unbent
the other side with the help of a heavy friend, a pry bar and a couple
milk crates and re-installed my newly unbent/cobbled bumper !!!!!!!

Looks REAL good and can't tell anything was smashed at all for a
very reasonable $400 bucks cash!
Insurance estimate was $2000 bucks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't want to do a insurance claim because you KNOW what happens
then at renewal time!!!!!!!!!!

Mike, here's the workup on how I built my bumper if it helps you get one built.

I was working on that poor old truck today. The bumper is showing some corrosion on the galvanizing where it collects debris but no rust showing anywhere yet.

Alan, Nice work. I have not done anything with the bumper, ran tight on money between un expected repairs & buying a mini-ex. I have to look at it this summer un less I get busier than expected, at the rate were going the phone is ringing....but the rain keeps coming, we were 30 inches over our seasonal average, now a record rainfall for month of april (like 3 inches above average), beteen the 2, I figure we have to be well over 6 inches above average year
