Anybody have an '03 Chevy 2500HD that grinds when you start moving after a stop, especially coming of the highway. Its not an ear screeching grind, just one that is noticable. I think it is the transfer case because it feeld like it is coming from under my feet. Brought it into chevy, but they could not find the problem so they marked it and told me when I have some time bring it back and the service manager will ride with me. The funny thing is that I had '89 GMC 2500 and I swear it did the same thing.
I believe I know exactly what you are talking about. Same thing happens on my '02 Chevy 2500HD and my father '03 Chevy 2500HD. I notice it alot of time when I am travelling at high speed (50-70 MPH) and I slow down to make a turn (90 degrees). Once I come to stop or near stop and attemp to make a turn, there seems to be some kind of vibration coming from the rear. I believe that it is from transfer case locking up. You know what happen when both rear wheels are locked when making a turn, one tire will try to rotate more than the other, but because it is locked, one of tire would have to slip.
One thing I noticed is that it started right after I took my truck in for a normal service. Prior to the service, my truck tires were at the max PSI of 80 since I took delivery of the truck. I never noticed any vibration in the rear during those entire time frame. After the recent service, which once again is when I first noticed the vibration, I checked the pressure at each tire and found that it is reduced down to 50-55 PSI. So I guess with softer tires, it would make it harder for the tire to slip which would cause the vibration. It is not a serious vibration, but just enough to notice so I wonder if it is ok or if it is a bad thing. I guess if this is pretty common, than we probably would be ok?
We both have limited slip differential option but I am not sure if it is what is causing the rear tires to lock up. Is it normal for both tires to lock up when travelling at high speed?
