Hello guys,

I just bought a Meyers 36000 tailgate spreader, it did not come w/ the controls.

Could you tell me if there is an easy way to rig up a control ? Or as a 2nd option i guess, would one of the buyers control boxes work ?

Seems it wouldnt be to tuff to just put something together tho, like maybe an old heater fan switch maybe, i dun know.. just looking for opinions.

Thanks
Jer

PS Looks like a nice site you guys got here, just like to say thanks. Lots of good reading here.

Your best bet would be to buy a controller from eBay. The Buyers controllers should also be the same as the Meyers, but as long as you connect the spreader correctly, almost anything should work for you.

If you want something simple,it can be done with just a HD switch,or a smaller switch controlling a relay.

While variable speed is a nice feature,I find a lot of people never use it much once the novelty wears off. Some of the controllers can be expensive and do not tend to last too long.

If you just want to us a simple switch, get a HD toggle switch rated for at least 30 amps.Run a 10 Ga wire from the battery (with a 30 amp fuse),to one terminal of the switch. The other terminal of the switch goes back to the motor. The other wire on the motor must run to a good ground.

Adding a relay takes the load off the switch,so you can use something smaller, less HD.You run a fused 10 Ga wire to pin 30 on the relay, and a 10 Ga back to the unit from pin 87.Pin 86 gets grounded, and pin 85 needs a small 16-18 Ga wire from you control switch. You can pick up power anywhere under the dash to feed the switch.

Thanks wyldman

Sounds easier then i thought it was gonna be, so w/ those spreaders, does it matter how fast the motor spins ? i guess i assumed it just took the variable speed control to speed up and slow down the motor depending on throw distance desired.

If you want the variable speed, you need a controller.

You can still vary the spread pattern and quantity via a feed gate and the deflectors,so even with a single speed you will have pretty good control. The motors aren't real powerful,so even at full speed,it won't throw it real far.

So the ORG wire harnes with a 30amp or better switch should work with any spreader. I found a Snow Ex 575 with wire harness but no controler for a good price. I was thinking a nice switch with on/off light would make for a nicer in cab look.
Yes,it will work with any spreader as long as the switch is rated to carry the current needed for the spreader motor.

I still think the relay is the best way.All your big heavy wiring is outside, all you have is one small 18 Ga wire to run from the cab.You can also use a much smaller switch,as most relays only use 500 mA (1/2 amp) or so.

I'd use an on-off-momentary switch,so you have the choice of turning it on and leaving it on,or flip the switch the other way for a momentary blast.A warning light,or lighted switch is also nice,so you don't forget when it's on.

Omega Motor Controllers for Salt Spreaders

Hey Guys,

Karrier Company offers an Omega motor controller for every brand and type of all-electric salt spreading system on the market. They all come with a 2 year warranty. We even have various pigtails available to make installation easy. All of our controllers include a feature we call "Guardian" that constantly monitors the current and protects the controller from burn out. We designed in special start-up algorythems to get your spreader started too. I put a spreader compatability chart on our website to make it easy to select the right Omega controller for your spreader. See our website for more information and pricing www.karrierco.com or just give me a call 330-823-9597. I'll be happy to help.

Bob
